What is the difference between suction feed water pumps and pressure feed water pumps? Suction feed pump have to go get (suck out of a tank) the water and then push the water down the hose, while pressure feed pump system is being force feed with the 75 psi building pressure direct into the pump and substancally increase pump life, increase pump ‘use’ pressure and usually clean at about 10 degree hotter than suction feed design. Most portables that have a freshwater tank are suction feed, while machines in the Goliath series are pressure feed. In a side-by-side comparison with the exact same pump installed under the hood of both machines, you can have a suction feed machine read 500 psi standby pressure, then squeeze the trigger and it cleans at 350 psi. Then again take the same pump and wand and pressure feed it and it will standby pressure on the gauge 500 but squeeze the trigger on the wand and it will clean at 425 psi. The water is usually about 10 degrees hotter on pressure fee because the water flows from the customer’s water heater directly to the pump and onto the carpet. In suction feed design the water stops and sits in the freshwater tank for 15 minutes while it cools down before it hits the carpet. It also is aerated by filling buckets and passing through the air as it is poured. Between added pump seal life, high use pressure and higher water temperatures, I have never understood why so many customers want to waste time filling and emptying their portable carpet cleaning tanks… I cannot think of a single reason why a portable has a freshwater tank in the first place as all these carpet cleaning pumps can suck water out of a trash can, ice chest, bathtub, etc. if you really what to suction feed your machine simply drop the pick-up hose in the bathtub. Dah. No carpet cleaning machine really needs a freshwater tank. It simply is a waste of machine weight and manufacturing expense.
