stroke the carpet
The first thing that came to mind is, when possible, start off with a machine that has more suction. 6 and 8 stage portables work great. Make sure that the dump valve and the waste tank gasket does not have a leak in them. Make sure that the waste tank filter is clean for maximum air flow. Make sure that you have not exceeded the maximum hose length for your extractor vacuum style.
While stroking the carpet, please keep in mind the longer water stays on the carpet, more it soaks deeper in the filaments making it harder to dry. With this in mind, please perform the dry stoke right away. Don't clean a 6' X 6' area first and then go back and do the dry stoke in the same area.
Should I prespray heavy or light. The answer is heavy. Cleaner carpets dry faster than dirty carpets. I ran multiple test on different carpets to confirm these statements.
