  • Best Locations to Start a Cleaning Company

    Question: Hi,
I am considering the start up of our own carpet cleaning business. Right now I am just doing the research to determine if this geographic location is a good area to start. Do you suggest any sites or resources for me to get certain data like how many competitors are in a given area?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer: Now as far as finding out how many competitors are in a given area, you are going going to have to use the internet yellow pages. I do not know of any other resources.

Now, iff you are open to start at any location in the country, I would look at locations that have a higher average income, higher tourism, military base or bases, lower cost of living. You will also notice that warmer climates allow for less of a seasonal business. In colder climates sometimes consumer have a tendency to hunker down and not go out to eat or leave their home as much. Let me explain these statements. The average carpet cleaning customer is a female with a family income over $70,000 a year. Families that make less than this will often look at rentals and owning a baby carpet cleaning machine for spot cleaning. Higher Tourism creates more restaurants to clean and more hotels and motels to clean. This in turns mean more car rentals to clean. All these industries have side industries that you can perform, like smoke odor removal. Military bases create rental property. This in turn means more carpet repairs, more spot and stain removal, more pet odor removal, more make ready work. Port cities create opportunities for yacht cleaning. Vacation locations create opportunities for RV interior cleaning. The last are is higher probability for disaster work. These are areas that are in or near forest and forest fires (smoke odor removal), Oceans for hurricane flooding, Tornado's for wind and rain damage clean up, Earth Quake and Mud slide locations. I do not know how much you want to place yourself in the line of fire but these opportunities can be lucrative. The last area of work is after math clean up. These are strictly population driven. The higher number of people that live in a sq mile the more clean up of people from suicides, crimes, drug lab clean up, and finding people that live alone and are not missed for days at a time.

Now as far as finding out how many competitors are in a given area, you are going going to have to use the internet yellow pages. I do not know of any other resources.
